Market Trends
Some of the key trends affecting the industry are as follows:
- The internet has for years provided access to unprecedented amounts and variety of information, but now, with the advent of broadband services, the full gamut of data services can be handled. The high and increasing penetration of broadband and its ability to handle all types of data (it's all just "bits" after all) means the internet is rapidly taking on the role of the superhighway for all types of information. For example;
- More and more services are migrating to the internet eg. shopping, banking etc.
- Email is almost an essential today, meaning people are familiar with the internet and everyone needs access.
- Traditional forms of media are going electronic:
- Newspapers are now on line as well as newspapers' primary revenue earner, classified advertising.
- Television broadcasters are already using cable TV.
- Radio stations are already web casting over the internet and internet radio is starting to take off.
- Wireless internet has taken off, driven by consumers' desire for the benefits of internet to be accessible anywhere. This has been enabled by:
- rapid development of wireless communications technologies - 3G phones going to 4G, WIFI release n, WIMAX, Bluetooth etc.
- rapid increases in the number of wireless internet devices being produced.
- With respect to wireless portable devices:
- OEM devices are converging e.g. PDAs are really just small computers and mobiles are going the same way. They are producing devices on to which third party software can be loaded – for many years this has applied with laptops and now mobile phones and PDAs are following.
- Mobile phone use has a very high penetration rate and mobile phones are now offering expanded services, such as photography, GPS positioning and now internet access.
- OEM's are striving to provide wireless devices that are standards and technology independent, i.e. the devices are capable of using several technologies, e.g. WIFI and WIMAX or GSM and WIFI, and using the appropriate technology in the particular circumstances to provide the optimal service to Users.
- Software for use on wireless devices is being designed to be device independent.
Delivering the Service
Ubiquitous internet accessibility implies that the following elements are in place:
- Internet capable consumer electronic devices are readily available for a price that buyers are willing to pay.
- The internet communications technology is sufficiently advanced to provide the quality of service required.
- Wireless network coverage is sufficiently broad that consumers can readily connect to the internet when they want.
miRoamer believes that it is very clear that wireless internet access will continue to develop rapidly.
Media content must be readily available over the internet in an easily accessible and user friendly form. Most radio stations now stream their radio programs over the internet in addition to their traditional broadcasting mode and many more specialist internet-only services are continually arising. While this media content is readily available from the internet through a PC for example, this is not the case for fixed or mobile wireless devices. This is where the miRoamer Media Platform comes in:
miRoamer provides the required accessibility, ease of use and functionality to access specialist internet services without being tied to one location.
A high degree of technical sophistication is necessary to achieve this, but from a consumer's perspective, it is imperative that it all just works simply and easily!
The "explosion" of wireless internet devices.
There is no doubt that the portable wireless internet-capable device sector is today one of the "hottest" sectors of the consumer electronics marketplace. This is being driven by the desire of device manufacturers to provide as much functionality as possible on the devices to increase their attractiveness to consumers.
Formerly, the portable consumer device market had discernible market segments based on the application being delivered. Thus, there were personal music players (PMPs) for music devotees, there were devices for business applications like email and digital organizers (the so called PDAs) as well as mobile phones and other specialized devices.
These distinctions have now become blurred as OEMs strive to provide multi function devices. For example, the latest mobile phones offer:
- Traditional voice telephony and SMS text messaging
- Integrated music players
- Software for personal organization
- Email functionality
- Internet access
- WiFi capability
- Bluetooth functionality
Similarly, former specialist PDAs now include phones, internet access, emails etc.
Fundamentally, the devices are rapidly becoming small computers offering a mobile software platform for the delivery of a wide variety of software applications. In Japan for example, the use of PCs is declining in the face of users switching to high end smart phones to provide the services they are looking for.
miRoamer's position in the marketplace
miRoamer intends that its media platform will be the default standard to enable Users to access internet media, just as Google is the internet search engine of choice and potentially Skype is the default software of the delivery of VOIP.
